Bhaktapur- the City of Devotees

Bhaktapur is one of the three major cities of Kathmandu valley. Bhaktapur translates to “City of Devotees,” and indeed, it is. The city flaunts ancient arts and culture amidst the cobblestone streets, palace courtyards and towering shikhara-style temples.

The city is home to one of the 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Nepal, Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The Newari Culture co-exist with medieval architecture. The temple blends with the tradition of local people here.

Enjoy a laidback stroll around the city and discover exquisite woodcarving, handicrafts, beautiful paintings, and eat Juju Dhau around the corner. Juju Dhau translates to “king of yogurt.” It is considered the finest yogurt in all of Nepal.

 The shop-lined alleyways around Durbar Square brim with shops selling everything from marionette (string puppet) to Thanka and handicraft. Walk further to the south, and you will be at Potter’s Square, where you will be surprised to see rows of clay pots being sun-dried.

Bhaktapur is divided into four areas: Pottery Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, and Dyattraya Tole. Layaku (Durbar Square), Nyatapola Temple, Bhairab Nath Temple, Dattatraya Temple, Kailash Mahadev Statue, and Pottery Square are some of the major landmarks of Bhaktapur. Pottery Square is believed to date back to the 12th century, and the Durbar Square dates back to the 17th century. 

Bhaktapur remains intact and preserves an ancient way of life. The exquisite woodcarving, stone temple, magnificent windows, stone monoliths, and every artistic creations dates back to medieval periods.
